About Us

JUDO
In 1882, Dr Jigoro Kano (1860 – 1938) founded the art of Judo (柔道). Making adjustments and adaptations from the unarmed ancient art of Ju-Jitsu (柔术), Dr Kano developed the system based on two concepts “Maximum Efficiency with Minimum Effort” (精力善用 Sei-Ryoku Zen-you) and “Mutual Welfare and Benefit” (自他共栄 Ji-ta Kyou-ei).

From the onset, Judo has been developed as a competitive sport. In Dr Kano’s own lifetime, he saw Judo being introduced to the world in the Olympic Games in the form of an informal demonstration at the 1932 Los Angeles Games. However, it was nearly 30 years after Dr Kano’s passing, in 1964, that Judo became officially included in the Olympics.

More importantly, as a renowned educator, Dr Kano saw Judo as a system of physical education that can promote self-improvement and lead to the betterment of society in general. In his own words, “Judo, in reality, is not a mere sport or game. I regard it as a PRINCIPLE OF LIFE, ART AND SCIENCE. In fact, it is a means for PERSONAL CULTURAL ATTAINMENT… All things connected with it should be directed to its ULTIMATE OBJECT, the BENEFIT OF HUMANITY”
